About Martha

Now available from Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS-KNAW), Utrecht The Netherlands

In 2009 Martha Christensen donated a collection of approximately 2226 cultures of original isolates of soil microfungi to the CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre, Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The Soil Microfungal Collection is currently in the process of being accessioned into the CBS Collections to ensure its long term preservation and availability to the scientific community at large. Strains will be distributed at regular prices as indicated on the CBS website (www.cbs.knaw.nl).

Here, at Martha Christensen's website, you can still search for all strains in her collection using various criteria. In case a strain has no CBS number assigned yet, you can contact her directly by email (martchris@att.net), to inquire after availability. In case a CBS accession number is already available, you can place your order directly at CBS using the CBS webpages.

The culture collection consists of lyophilized isolates of soil microfungi in approximately 163 genera. There are three sub-collections:

  1. Wisconsin Soil Fungi collection (WSF Series), consisting of cultures isolated by students of M. P. Backus, W. F. Whittingham and J. T. Curtis (Department of Botany, University of Wisconsin-Madison) in 1950 - 1965;
  2. Rocky Mountain Fungi collection (RMF Series), consisting of isolates from surveys conducted at the University of Wyoming in 1963 to 2001. Samples were collected using soils from approximately 80 sites in North America including 7 Long-term Ecological Research sites (LTER). Samples from about 48 sites in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America also are included in the RMF collection.
